Can you remember what browser they used on the public terminals at Cambridge? Ie those in JCR Computer Rooms, Libraries, Bars, Departement Computer rooms, Toilets etc etc.

At oxford they had us stuck on the shittest-browser-ever netscape 4.

Just coding up my page for Cambridge and need to know if i can use stuff like CSS.

Cheers for any info!

in fact if any of you guys can remember what your uni used could you post it for my future reference? ICL and Durham would be particularly useful right now...
King
I can't really remember...but you could use either netscape or internet explorer though ie was the default...don't know which numbers were attached...sorry. It's your fault for calling it ICL; it's Imperial College, IC or Imperial, whatever the numpties in charge there say, so there.

Dan,

Christ's Computer Room - Netscape/IE (5?)
Christ's Library - Don't know
Christs's Porter's Lodge - Lynx
Computer Science Department - IE (6?)
Christ's Toilets - IE 8

It's probably worth adding that, back when I was an undergraduate, the Computer Officer at Christ's was

- annoyed with the number of security issues there were in IE/Outlook
- keen on open source software.

Now that Mozilla has become fairly stable, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was installed on machines in the Computer Rooms.
Sammyboy
Mozilla: the result of crossbreeding between Godzilla and Mo Mowlam.

Frightening.

You will be pleased to know that while I was at Oxford and then Cambridge studying tiddly-doo spot quiffy qua, my grade point average ran to an astounding pinkly pong due to the use of Netscape on the student union computers.

Toodle pip fellow honorary cheesemongers.
jonnyploy
UCL use IE6. They also have Netscape and Mozilla but no one uses them cos they are ancient versions. My info on Durham is a bit out of date, but when I was there they were using Netscape version minus 12 ish. I can find out for you though, give us a day or two.
DanSon
Thank you good sirs! Even managed to get a visit from the Williams. I'm going to have to redo my entire site now to make it compatible with IE 8.

I hear that ICL oh excuse me IC is launching some ic4life service. Have you heard of this king/tart?

And ploy - have you heard of dunelm.org.uk?
King
Yeah they launched IC4life while we were there...a website where you could keep up with IC and have an email along the lines of Dan.Tosser@ic4life.co.uk...but it's been switched off: see?
jonnyploy
Yeah Dannyboy, the Durham graduates get a free email address when they leave if they want it, so probably not worth bothering to be honest. Dunelm is the Durham equivalent of Oxford's Oxon and Cambridge's Cantab; i.e. the name that you put after your degree to show that you went there. It's Durham's half-arsed attempt at pretending that they are anywhere near as good as Oxbridge.
DanSon
Kingol - did you get one of them or know anyone who had? Was it popular? Thinking of doing something with them since they seem to want to keep ic4life as a forwarding only address.

Hahaha Ploy - still I feel that I should cater to their desire to be at the top tier with Oxford and Imperial (i'm not forgetting anything am I?)

I've actually spoken to the Alumni office at Durham and we're going to do a full integration (all things well) of my system with theirs. Dunelm it appears is also only a forwarding address.

ie Just like Cambridge's cantab.net. I've just launched http://www.cantabgold.net for those who are interested. Matt might like to comment on my cheeky use of a "flaw" in email security and whether I'm going to be shafted (ie will they fix this flaw?).

Oh and by the way - how long does did it take for you to get your cantab.net address? On their site it says 5 days but is it really?

What are you guys using now for email (those without uni accounts)? If Wozza were to do a bit of magic with badgerfest's MX records I (or pete?) could host some sammyboy@badgerfest.com type accounts...

Unlimited amounts of badgers with each account - but only if you don't receive any emails for 18 years. Bargin.

Yep, I had one...didn't use it much. On the whole I think people thought it was a good idea poorly executed. Shite service and whatnot...I only used it as an e-mail address and only that briefly. I didn't pay much attention to technical stuff I'm afraid.

I use @yahoo.com

I haven't done a lot of looking at what the service offers but I imagine that your web server spoofs the email headers so that it appears to have come from @cantab.net when it really came from @cantabgold.net. I guess the function that's most likely to break this is the SPF (Sender Permitted From) enhancement. I have no idea whether this is likely to be implemented any time soon.

It took less than 5 days (probably nearer 2) when I got mine, but I did that fairly soon after the scheme was started, so I probably got in before the rush.

I use
@dataconnection.com for work
@cantab.net for friends from Uni (which redirects to @dataconnection.com)
@hotmail.com for signing up to stuff on the Internet.

Interesting quote from the book I am currently reading 'One Hit Wonderland' by Tony Hawks (excellent by the way), talking about how he is confused by mobile phones:

"... with modern technology all you can do is hope, because everything is so darned sophisticated that only 1 per cent of the population has any idea how anything works. How many people do you know who take the back off their computer and have a good rummage around every time it crashes? (If the answer to that question is four, I suggest that you implement a thorough review of your social scene.)"

Well I can think of at least five so I'll see you all later. Much later.

King
Hmmm that is worrying...(nice sig by the way).
