Could one of you ICLites crack open some alumni action and tell me what email service Imperial offer their alumni?

The login page is:
https://www.imperial.ac.uk/NetCommunity/SSL...d=186&srcid=183

Am wondering what kind of effort they've made after the embarrasing hash of ic4life.

Ta much,
Dan

I'll be happy to once I've managed to convinve them I did actually go there. They want some membership numbe printed on the magazines they send.

Like I keep any of their magazines...

Anyway, I'm on it.

I'll have to have a look when I get home; I can't remember my login. I only registered so they'd stop sending me stuff I don't read. Now they e-mail me stuff I don't read.
Tart
As far as I can tell now I have registered - they offer fuck all.

You can have your old IC email forwarded to another address. That's it.
Time for you to step in with a proposal Dan?
DanSon
Thanks a lot guys. Much appreciated.

Out of interest - what would be your imperial address that you can forward? The exact same one you had at uni or one like tart@alumni.ic.ac.uk?

Once I get this Cambridge Uni deal wrapped up I'll be in a better position to say

'OI! Imperial! NO!"

And sort their lives out for them.

Dan

No it's my old one.

chris.walker99@ic.ac.uk or maybe @imperial.ac.uk it was ic ac uk in my day so that probably still works, but I think it said imperial.ac.uk on the alumni website.

Are Google muscling in on your act Dannyboy?

Google is expanding its empire into universities - with entire campus e-mail networks switching over to using Google's e-mail service...These e-mail addresses, which can be accessed from any online computer, can be kept by students when they leave universities.
Tart
It sounds like http://google.co.uk/a/ for universities.

Top notch idea. Apart from the fact Dan would be out of business, I can't see why they don't use gmail anyway. I do for my domain. It's a better webmail client than any other I've seen (even Squirrel Mail) and with the POP access as well as authenticated SMTP and pretty good zero-config Spam protection. If google don't take over the world I will be surprised.
DanSon
Yep been hearing a lot about this today. Discussed it with my contact at UCL. Basically we feel there isn't any danger of larger uni's going this path due to reservations about loss of control / privacy / image. Something my company ensures is not a problem.

Google is perfect, and great for smaller institutions, but it'll be a while before the top 20 type universities think about selling out to google.

And by then I'll have them all nicely wrapped up....maybe. =)

One of our major projects is to give squirrelmail interface a serious overhaul. Basically something to beat gmail. That's our main distinguishing disadvantage at the moment to google.

We're hoping to have something for 2007 but our work with the Haileybury Society is likely to delay that a bit.

www.hailsoc.com for those vaguley interested (to be compared with www.haileybury-society.org.uk).

We're currently debating:

hailsoc.com
hailsoc.net
hailsoc.org

Votes?

Register all 3. Use .org as the primary.
DanSon
Thanks Pete. We have all 3 and are just wondering what to use as the primary.

They also thought .org but I was not sure as to the effectiveness of that within an email address. They're planning on giving every leaving Hailyburian a free email address - either forwarding or otherwise - and .net might be a more useful compromise?

Obviously that's my opinion stated on the choice.
Tart
I have always had a preference for .net but it does go against it's intended use - for ISPs - and the intended use for .org is exactly this.

So I agree with Pete.
DanSon
Ok thanks for your views. I'm down at haileybury next week giving a presentation to a group of heads of Old Pupil societies and I'll decide then with Bishop and Woodburn.

I'll be having the lovely privilage of my first ever powerpoint presentation. The don't have any internet in the pavilion and i'll need to be showing screenshots.

They basically want a primer about all this 'new internet' business (web 2.0 / facebook / myspace / youtube etc).

Whilst appropriate, I promise not to give details about The Fest!
