It isn't 10 years that the forum has been running. It seems like it was maybe the second half of 2003.<br />
<br />
It certainly isn't 10 years of us knowing each other, that varies and is gonna be longer than that in most cases.<br />
<br />
However since I put the "blatantly ploying since 1999" tagline on the site (if you use that skin) then we're now in 2009 this calls for 10 year anniverasy celebrations.<br />
<br />
Well, that too might be a bit extreme, but it means we should at least fix badgerfest.
Or upgrade.<br />
<br />
Which is the route I'm looking at, so I need to know what features people actually use / want out of badgerfest.<br />
<br />
I.e. the ability to post a slap directly to Drew (though the most requested forum feature globally, no forum yet supports this).<br />
<br />
So my list so far goes:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Post Topics in forums. (that one is a bit of a no brainer)</li>
<li>Post counts and humorous "rankings" </li>
<li>Polls.</li>
<li>Manage Birthdays / addresses for the group (could be useful)</li>
<li>Have RSS feeds of pertinent stuff, brithdays, posts, etc...</li>
<li>Image gallery function.</li>
<li>Private Messaging ?</li>
<li>File attachments</li>
<li>Optional Email Notifications</li>
<li>The other really obvious thing I just missed...</li>
</ul>
<br />
So you people who use Badgerfest, tell me what you want.<br />

I'd quite like the ability to favourite/bookmark individual posts/comments a la Metafilter etc.
Then would be able to chuckle at them for years to come without having to trawl through or remember a keyword to search for.

I was fully expecting you to say lets go for a piss-up =) Still reckon we should try to re-energise the villa in south-of-france idea - even if for 2010.
Forum request:
A major visual / audio alert whenever Drew or Mango has posted on the forum as these are significant events indeed.
View showing all recent/unread posts without having to click through to each forum area.

Ooh, yes please.

How about a 'cake of the week' whereby members can comment on their favourite cake of the week, perhaps there could be added capacity for an annotated photo?
Then, if that really takes off we could have 'bakery of the month' so everyone knows which bakery is best to visit in all the badgerfest towns of Great Britain..
Of course...there could be pub of the quarter, annual hotel awards etc...but maybe we should start small scale with cake of the week/ bun of the month/ fry up of the weekend/ ale of the summer, spank of the fortnight (that most relevant to Drew and Govind) etc etc...

I think we should have a ten year celebration (or eleven year next year) we can always just arbitrarily rule that badgerfest started in 1999.
good ideas too, keep em coming.
Bookmarks and and a link to recent posts on the front page get my vote...
if theres anyway to have the option to display all posts since a specified date, it'd be handy,
i've always used the "view new posts" link in the top right, but i think that only displays posts since you last signed in, and some times i dont have time to read through all the posts at once.
Perhaps a mobile version of the site? Though this is being posted from my new htc magic so it already works pretty well.
Google Wave: I got an invite - not long now.
When did you apply Pete? I said I was interested about a week ago on the wave site, so it would be interesting to know if I have to do more to get on this bandwagon.
I haven't got an invite yet either... pete must have given a good spiel on why he wanted it...
I just said I wanted it to kill facebook.
is this one of those invites that gets you other invites?
seeing as i created the "happy birthday pedro" thread, i demand i get an invite...
I can wait. Whoever gets the invite will only have Pete on as a contact and will have to put up with his flood of 'I could have done this bit better' chat ;o)
I now have Wave Sandbox access. It is slow, buggy and missing many of the features that we saw in the Google I/O video. However, from the hour or so that I have spent playing with it, my opinion of its importance remains undiminished.
Google gave me a second account for communication testing:
http://wavesandbox.comusername: peter.blake-test
password: badgerfest
Use it to explore the Sandbox. Let me know when you login (via SMS) and I may be able to test the real-time features with you.
I want to avoid getting the account disabled by having too many concurrent connections with the same username. Please add session start and end posts to this thread so that only one person is logged in at a time. Feel free to show the Sandbox to others, but do not distribute the account information.

I applied about a week after the Google I/O presentation.

I used the magic word
graphene in my development proposal.

It may be a while before Google allows 2nd gen invites. The Sandbox is unstable even with the current number of users (a few thousand).
im gonna log in now and have a play
woz must have enjoyed it - he never logged out. =p
Just quickly is wave an open standard which other providers will be able to hook in to? Or are they going for cornering the entire online communications market for themselves with this one?

The
Wave protocol is open. Google did not have a choice; failure would be certain otherwise.
Anyone who uses 'Initech' as an example company name deserves a medal. Nice work Peter man!
Also, I'm guessing you filled in the link from the dev site, not just the fanboy link I used:

Also, the prototype of the wave server software is available for install
http://code.google.com/p/wave-protocol/wiki/Installation although it seems too feature-deficient at the moment to be worth too much attention.
I'm looking forward to having a play when Ween logs out...
Just re-noticed this thread and it looks like it is actually 10 years since Badgerfest.com (assuming 2nd half of 2003 was accurate).
I think the only way this place is going to get upgraded is if we organise a weekend hackathon along those lines.
Although I am actually getting quite fond of the now rather retro experience of coming back here. I'd be up mainly for putting in a notifications system so we can all know when something new is posted - will surely increase traffic. And we'd hard code in the notifications to ON for Drew / Noj.
I totally agree.Crazily I actually build a tiny amount of a base Badgernews app in my lunch break today. I had the idea a little while ago. Shouldn't be too hard to make a App that pops notifications when new posts come in (android of course, those iOS bitches can fend for themselves...).
I don't event need to put code up on the badgerfest server as the RSS feed is fine for a polling datasource.
I originally thought all-singing-all-dancing, but then realised that would take work, and the less work involved the more likely it will materialise...
Of course we could be ultra-hipster and migrate the whole thing to Discourse... (Jeff Atwood's new pet project
https://github.com/discourse/discourse). Getting the data across will be the biggest dick-ache but I reckon it might be worth it.... my 2 cents.
And so here's the test version for those who care... and have Android Phones (4.0+ only)
After install open the app and click the only button.
expect nothing to happen until someone posts on here.

Where is my Windows Phone one?
In reply to JB, if you provide me a windows phone I may build you an app.
In response to king, not massively well. But that will get better... It didn't work at all on Rosie's desire c, but works on both my nexuses (nexi?). Also it only ever shows the latest post, I want it to list a few.
Let me know of any phones it does/doesn't work.
I'll post any updates here.
Well nothing appears to be happening with my HTC one S...
I've just installed it on my Galaxy Note 2,
Let the badgering commence...
(quite proud of that last comment, it works on many levels)
Here's the new one that will work on hopefully with Mike's HTC. It certainly started working on Rosie's.
There's some new stuff I want to put in it as it's super limited at the moment (e.g. only shows the last post, just forwards you to badgerfest). I'd like to make it so it can store posts and show them in the app itself by thread. With a quick-reply option. Should be too tricky, but takes time. You'll hear about it here.
