Was I the only one horrified to see a forlorn face of a badger splashed over the front of my broadsheet this morning?
It appears that hundreds of our furry friends, and let's not forget, the ones that lend their names to our glorious website forum, are due to be gassed to prevent TB in cattle. Cattle! Save the Badger!
I hereby start the mission to save these innocent badgers, our friends, from the doom that awaits them.

afternoon chaps! back on leave and back on the internet. i've been
sent out of camp for a month so i have a vague plan to get down to
cape town to find some fun. i've been given a whole load of numbers
of friends of friends so i guess i'll just see what happens - but
all is sounding pretty cool. as for plans to return to blighty i'm
not planning to until chrimbo. but then i'll, probably get back for
chrimbo and spend january catching up with you guys. I like the
sound of austrian skiing muchly and if we can organise it for
January i'll be all there and half way back - sounds awesome!!!
as for reports from the bush things are looking very wet. our usual
annual rain fall is about 450mm and at present we are well past the
550mm mark and still going. roads are now a joke - its a case of
having to ask guest to get out for certain stretches while i just
floor it through hoping i come out the outher end with a
differential still in place. digging out is a regular occurrence
and now even getting to the airstrip is touch and go! anyway, i've
just heard that camp has now been closed because all the roads are
impassable without convoy of guys to dig every last inch -
incredable. anyway it doesn't really affect me coz i'm of to find
some tarmac for a month - timed that one well!
cool, well keep me posted on the skiing plans if they come to
fruition and i'll type again soon. Any of you guys panning on
heading south of the equator at anytime?

afternoon all. have found my way down to Jo'brg and am currently
trying to get out with my balls intact. well, i guess it ain't that
bad - its just people pick up on the accent and home in with the
usually to the point demand for money. man these guys are
unimaginative, they don't even try with a sob story. anyway, gonna
head out tonight with an over night bus to cape town which will be
pretty intense but its gonna be worth it as i'm told its the place
for sun, sea, sand and eveything else beginning with 's'
(like...ermm...squid). anywho. theres also an major jazz festival
on over easter in cape town so im gonna get me some culture.
details of uncharted fun and games can be found at
www.unchartedafrica.com but just don't look at the prices! if you
guys are keen i get a quota of free bednights at jacks of which only
the sister has taken up the gauntlet so there is still 9 left to use
before the end of the year. but basically its cheap as chips to get
around out here if your into camping and public transport (eg in
getting from Maun to Gabarone - 1 end of the country to the other -
it took 12 hours by bus and all for 9 quid!) ontop of that i get
more bednights in the delta with this other company that we are kinda
joined to.
good to hear about the skiing thing Nils - it'll be awesome - what
the news for the rest of you guys? yey or ney or undecided? anyway,
keep me posted

I also noticed today that the symbol for the Borough of Broxbourne Council is a Badger. Surely some sponsorship deal could be struck, i.e.: 'Borough of Badgerfest'... or something.
I've found out what happened to one of those gassed badgers at least.

The latest message from Bowl (aka Colonel Kurtz) in the depths of africa:

chaps, lads and gentlemen
i have been doing my best Brando impression of late by spending 3
months in the bush going stir crazy - welcome to the silly season!!!
its been back to back guiding all the time running around like a
blue arsed fly. but anyway its been kinda cool, the guests have
been kinda cool. Nils, I had that antony minghals dude in my car a
while back (not sure on the spelling but he was the guy that did
English patient) he is one chilled out mofo! then had Joel Coen
and his Mrs. (chick that won all the oscars out of Fargo) in camp
aswell they were also pretty cool but they came with a guide who was
a dick. although either his career is on the down or he doesn't
have much of clue about exchange rates coz his tip was crap!!
anyhowdawho, we been having Lions all over camp at the min which has
proved entertaining, one night they were right outside our staff
tents roaring - and i slept right through - feck!
but now I'm on leave for 10 days so, true to form, i hit the bright
lights of maun and got wrecked with a whole load of hippies and
pilots and other layabouts of maun. Managed to get a few freee
nights in some delta camps which was cool, chilling out next to
water and being kept awake all night by hippos (nuf of it Ali, I
know what your thinking!)
so thats the crack down this end, sunburn is a regular occurence.
and i'm looking to sort out some guiding courses soon so i'll join
you in the 'exams-at-23' front, only these test my ability to shoot
straight and identifying birds - cooshtie!
just booked my flight home for
christmas so i'll be back in blighty on the 23rd Dec and be mooching
around until Jan 27th so there should be plenty of opportunity to
do 'T-in-the-diner' impersonations - nils howz yours coming on?
thinking of which what plans do you guys have for that period and
which country you guys gonna be in?
Ta lots for the birthday wossits chaps and don't worry it wasn't
late I kinda postponed my birthday anyway coz the guests i had in
were your all american chumps, the weren't enjoyable people to be
around!
anywho, thats all i can think of thats worth prattling about so i
shall bid you chaps a tata and will no doubt chat again when i next
hit town, which i think will be Oct!
yours

Chaps, time for another Bowles Tri-monthly update. Verdict when
you think about it - Aardvarks kinda rule.
enough already - suggestions of going to Europe over Jan has got me
distinctly aroused. The only commitments i have to date are: 25th -
Christmas (apparently) w/end 15th/16th going to Norfolk with the
folks to admire the yaught (moff moff) and w/end 22nd 23rd with a
family bash covering my returning, Dads 60th, Mums 19th 39th (news
for blokes i have been informed that women don't actualy pass the
40th mark?!?) and my leaving back to the colonies! so anything
aside from that is perfick.
another thought that has just appeared in a moment of high spirts is
this 'yaught' thing. the old man has just got his retirment present
which is a little motor cruiser up on Norfolk broads. not to sure
on the pros and cons of this but i could see if we could borrow it
for a few days and go puttering around up there? pros free trip
out, checking out pubs and no drink driving laws. cons not sure
on how many it sleeps, 4 blokes, confined space and one of us snores
like an aardvark with a hernia - apparently - and Norfolk broads in
Jan...character building!
maybe its more of a summer time suggestion. any thoughts?
as for Plan A coosthie. although frugality i think is the way
forward as Botswana Pula don't go very far in Europe! but other
than that, lets go!
[guest]"if we see a meerkat we stay in the truck, right?"
[me] "no, no, we can get out and walk with them!"
[guest - in worried tones]"can they sense fear?"
[me] "[pause] they're 30cms tall."
muppets.
other guest clssics - (all genuine questions asked by guests)
Guest - do palm trees migrate?
guide - [no answer]
guest - do those wildebeest live in holes coz i don't see them
anymore?
guide - no they don't, the reason why you can't see them anymore is
because they have gone over a bit of a hill in front of us.
thats about it for the present. The sister arrives here this
afternoon then tomorrow we hit the delta in a big way an on up to
the falls. So we might pass the old internet over the next 2 weeks
so i'll give you a shout.
take care for now cahps and i'll see you all back in blighty soon
yours
Aardvarks
