Beause no-one seems to listen when I post about good music, even though you all know I'm right 'cos I'm brilliant, I'm gonna repeat my recommendation of Wolfmother: They have produced an album of rocking stupendous-ness that sounds like Uriah Heep mated with Led Zepplin and brought up with The White Stripes whilst listening to Yes.

The single plays in the backgorund on the website; have a listen, even if you think it's cacophonic tripe.

No, no, no... Cacophonic Tripe were in the 70's. They played support for Unforgiveable Racket.

By the way: you only first posted about Wolfmother yesterday! Give us a chance!

No
jonnyploy
Yes, and besides, I bought a Regina Spektor album the other day. Who says no one is listening?
jonnyploy
The reason I am up posting so late on a school night is that I went to the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho this evening. A young lady named Gwyneth Herbert was singing her songs and I'm now in love with her.
King
Well OK...the important word in within my petulance was 'seems'. Did you get the latest album then?

Hmm Gwyneth has talent but Jazz covers ain't really my thang (surprise!). You may put her on in the background with my blessing. Is that damning with faint praise? Not intentional.
Sammyboy
By the way have you guys checked out Wolfmother? They're really very good. Thats Wolfmother.
King
Who? Are they the ones that did the cover of that Noisesome Row classic?
govinddhar
Since everyone's jumping onto this music malarky - here's my contribution...

Carrie Tree

No you wont see her in the shops but how's about you look out for her in London or anywhere she's playing. Jyoti and I saw her at a tramp/hippy festival in Headcorn, Kent a year or so ago. She has the most beautiful voice in the world and has the whole hippy look going for her too. We saw her again in London playing at an abandoned shelter with psychedelic colours and throws everywhere. She does all these gigs for disaster relief and street children etc etc. If you see her performing in London...go! You will come away touched by an angel. How does one upload to something here - Ive got a sample CD of hers and Jesus Christ...

And as for other stuff:

Handsome Boy Modelling School - White People - hip hop tongue in cheek excellence and if you haven't already got How's Your Girl? - sort it out NOW!

Medieval Punditz - anything new

Cut Chemist - Litmus Test

Has anyone got onto www.pandora.com yet? Absolutely flipping amazing website!

Go forth and learn...and if you've already got this stuff - er sorry...

Yeah, not sure why she has all those covers on her website. She only did one cover in the whole set that we saw (Dolly Parton's Jolene). Her own songs are good.

The Regina album is the one she's released that is a collection of songs from her previous albums.

So far on the good albums front:

Flaming Lips - Ace

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Thumping

Embrace - Coldplay Mk II

Tomorrow - The Streets
govinddhar
Oi Beeyaches

I managed to catch a Fiona Apple song on MTV - fucking hell this girl is talented - she soudns like a cross between Natalie Merchant and Tori Amos - has anyone anything else to report on her? Recommended albums?

Song of the week, one I can't get out of my head:

Na Na Na Na Naa - Kaiser Chiefs

Ok ok ok

King you're gonna love this.

I heard this song on the radio the other day thinking it was some old b-side of Led Zep. Thought 'that's quite good, must find it...'

Turns out it was some obscure band called Wolfmother.

(Mike enters stage left dressed with nothing but a smug look on his face, some unsightly van and ipod shaped bruises, and says...)
King
You know you love it! I'll have you all listening to the cream of Aussie rock in no time.

Next up: The return of The Living End

Ooh yes please sir. Yum yum.

Fett's Vette
by Mc Chris

lyrics

Cruisin' Mos Espa in my Delorian,
War's over I'm a peacetime Mandalorian.
My story has stumped star wars historians
Deep in debate buffet plate at Bennigans.
Rhyme renegade sure to penetrate
First and second defense I won't hesitate.
Got a job to do Darth's the guy that delegates.
Got something against Skywalker someone he really hates. I don't give a fuck. I'm after Solo
For all I care he could be hiding at Yoda's dojo.
Gotta make the money, credit's no good
When the Jawas run the shop in your neighborhood.
Think you can cook? I got a grappling hook.
Let's make this quick coz I'm really booked.
I'm a devious degenerate, defender of the devil,
Shut down all the trash compactors on the detention level.

My backpack's got jets. I'm Boba the Fett.
I bounty hunt for Jabba Hutt to finance my 'Vette.
I chill in deep space, a mask is over my face.
I deliver the prize but I still narrow my eyes
Coz my time I don't like to waste. Get down.

I'm a question wrapped inside an enigma,
Get inside the Slave One, find your homing signal,
From Endor to Hoth, Ripley to Spock,
I'll find what you want, but there's gonna be a cost.
Say my name is Boba Fett. I know my shit is tight.
Start not acting right, you're frozen in carbonite.
Got telescopic sight, flame throwers on my wrist.
You still don't get the jist? Spiked boots are made to kick,
Targets are made to hit. You think I give a shit?
Your mama is a bitch! I'll see you in the Sarlaac pit.
You just flipped my switch, integrity been dissed.
You scratchin on my itch. You know I shoot the gift.
Got bambinas at cantinas waitin to lick my lusty lips,
So I'll let you get back inside you're little space ship,
Give you a head start, coz I'm the sporting kind.
Consider the starting line the sneaky smile I hide inside.
Hope you have hyper drive, pray to stay alive.
Don't try to slip me a five coz I never take a bribe,
To the beat of a different drummer, bad ass bounty hunter,
Let no man put asunder or else they be put under,
As in six feet. Got an imperial fleet
Backing me up. Gonna blow up any attempt to defeat.
They got the Death Star, got four payments on my car,
Hand it over to Hammer head at Mos Eisley bar.
He used to carjack, now he's a barback
Just goes to show how you can get back on the right track.
As for me that's not an option, can't say that with more clarity.
Me going legit would be like Jar Jar in speech therapy.

My backpack's got jets. I'm Boba the Fett.
I bounty hunt for Jabba Hutt to finance my 'Vette.
I chill in deep space, a mask is over my face.
I deliver the prize but I still narrow my eyes
Coz my time I don't like to waste. Get down.

Slice you open like a tauntaun, faster than the Autobahn,
Or a motorbike in Tron, do the deed and then I'm gone.
Jaba has a hissyfit, contact Calrissian,
Over a Colt, the plan unfolds, no politic is legit.
Back in the day when I was a slave
Living life in the fast lane like in a pod race,
My mean streak tweaked I became a basket case
So this space ace split that place poste haste.
Took up a noble cause called the Clone Wars
Coz life's not all about girls and cars,
Getting fucked up in fucked up bars,
See I'm not a retard or gay like DeBarge.
I'm large and in charge with a face so scarred,
A cold black heart that's been torn apart.
The Sith wish that they had a dick so hard
Coz it's long, long ago in a pussy far, far.
Call me "master," coz I'm faster than Pryor on fire
I no longer have to hot wire.
I'm a hunter for hire with no plans to retire,
And all the sucka MC's can call me "Sire"!

My backpack's got jets. I'm Boba the Fett.
I bounty hunt for Jabba Hutt to finance my 'Vette.

I was in HMV on oxford street recently and there was this lot called the guillemots (pardon spelling), never heard of them before but the stuff they were playing was good, the lead singer had an amazing voice.

I was actually there listening to some bloke called Linus Loves on the listening post, which was good also, when the band were called on. They all came trotting through the store, and the lead guitar guy ran into me and I knocked him into the bob dylan section as I fell back to the listening post!

He dusted himself down and kept going towards the little stage bit to start the set.

He told me himself to mention the band on here as way of recompense for shoving him into the bob dylan section, if it had been the bowie section he would have been fine but hey, thems the breaks.

Anyway long story short, or in this case long story long, I heard these guys for a couple of songs and thought they were pretty good.
King
As I posted on 6th Jan:

QUOTE
Guillemots - These guys remind me of Octopus - Came 5th in BBC's Sound of 06 Poll (Clap your Hands came 2nd). They can be quirky and catchy in one song and dreamy and haunting in the next. Quirky is better.

I haven't mentioned them much (or twice in a row that seems to get a response) since but I'm waiting impatiently for an album. They have some great songs: Trains to Brazil and Made Up Love Song No.2 are great (though the single they've released is No.43 so it appears they've changed it a bit since I first heard it). Check out their Xfm Session

So yes they're great good call Loz.

And Top Prize for spelling.

A bit of a story here, but stay with me:

I saw a reply of jools holland really, really late on a weekday once....(this sounds familiar)

Anyway I saw this amazing blind geetaaar player, called Raul Midon who took my breath away, he played live a rendition of his song called 'State of mind'. It was awesome, in every sense. He played the guitar like it was part of his body, with his hands just flowing over the thing.

He also did this vocal trumpet thing, and didn't just do this for a few bars, but for a whole portion of the song. Unique, I had never heard anything like it.

He only had one song, which on the 'later' show is quite unlucky, but even then completely blew away people like the Flaming Lips, Cat Power and divine Comedy, who had longer sets.

Anyone else seen this bloke?

I'll try and find a link to the video of his live playing on the show, to give an idea of what I've been babbling about.

Loz
That was my 50th post, woo and er hoo!

here's the link:

Awesome
King
That is awesome; especially as imo the lyrical bit wouldn't sound out of place coming from Timberlake, but the geetar and the trumpety thing just make it great. It's the first time I've seen a spontaneous round of applause during a song on Later... Stars in their Eyes style.

PS Loren you are a genius: I found KT Tunstall doing Cherry Tree... on Later on youtube. Watch it and you'll see exactly why I got so excited back when I first told you about it. The sound's a bit out of sync but still impressive.

RADIO

Heard last night on THE MARK RADCLIFFE SHOW (BBC Radio 2 10:30pm - midnight, joint best radio show currently on air) ((although currently being hosted by Tom Robinson who just sounds like a bit of a dodgy old man.))

Joan as Policewoman

Guitarry, melancholy, a bit different. Quite cool. Check it.

Also, new slot for the other joint holder of the best radio show on the planet ADAM & JOE -

10am - 1pm on Saturdays XFM 104.9. Superb.

I heard this track on the Bob Harris show earlier this evening, and thought, "quality". So I looked it up and thought I would share.

Xavier Rudd - The Letter (mp3)

It comes from the very soon to be released (i think - I couldn't quite understand - maybe it is out) album "Food in the Belly" which I am enjoying thoroughly.

~Here's the torrent for the album if you're interested...

Anyone interested in Flaming Lips at the Hammersmith Apollo in November?

Let me know asap as want to get tickets.

Big up yourselves.
jonnyploy
Sounds good. What's the exact date?

May I also draw people's attention to Jurassic 5 at Brixton Academy on 30 Sept?
Loz
I like the Jurassic 5 idea,

how much are tickets? will there be any left?

jonnyploy
Tickets are £20.35 a pop and according to ticketmaster, there are some available.

[attachmentid=195]This week, I have been mostly listening to:

It's Never Been Like That - Phoenix

I can't think of anyone who won't like this. A bold claim I know, but it's good. So there.

The stand out track for me is 'Rally':

"Standing in line, I think you're pretty/ lying on your bed, I think you're pretty too/ young girl curl your hair at night/ hook up with me, meet at the rally"

Lovely stuff.

King

Pleasant, vaguely like The Feeling; I'd borrow to listen further if allowed.

"But what does that mean?"

Slightly different vein - for those with more classical tastes have a gander at this animation video. Obviously requires sound:

The Piano Animation (2mins)
---------------------------------
An old man plays the piano whilst remembering the key moments and people in his life.:

http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=...piano+animation

(or http://video.google.com - search 'piano animation')

Very simple and very beautiful. I believe the music is by the composer who did the music for Amelie.

govinddhar
The Raconteurs - yes, yes, yes. Great 60s sounds married with a cool 21st century flavour. Not as rocky as the Stripes but genius to listen to.

Canned Heat - Best Of - Watched the Woodstock Movie recently and fuck me they knew how to do it baby. These guys are fucking cool - boogie-woogies blues all over my face. What's a boy to do?

Tool - latest album - not as amazing as Lateralus, but oh my God do these guys know how to do ambient, concept, hard rock. Coming off like Indian classical raags gone through a ROOOCK filter, this stuff is good.

Zakir Hussain and Allarakha - The definitive duo of classical Indian tabla music and a contemporary God in percussion compositions (ZH) this father and son duo are mind-enhancingly good. You have not understood the depth and mindblowing force of Indian percussion till you hear these guys create their own language through 'jugalbandi' (question and answer on instruments) and tabla duets. Sample their music if you can, or get the album called Together. You'll cry.

The music is a track from the Amelie soundtrack. This soundtrack is so amazing you can listen to it whenever you want and if you're a fan of the movie, it has an amazing ability to storm you into a childhood memory frenzy, and make your mind tingle at the same time. Get it without hesitation...every track is simply sublime - fairground sounds meets childhood.

The video's a little incomplete no? The music would make a 2 min video of a little girl running around a garden look beautiful. Its the music baby.

Anyone heard of Jerry C?

Taiwanese guy who rearranged some Pachenbal for the electric geetar. All very impressive if you ask me.
jonnyploy
Yes, my brother pointed him out to me once upon a time. V good.

Pedantic moment: it's Pachelbel...sorry.

My deepest apologies; I am a complete heathan when it comes to proper music.

One of the best things I have seen in a fecking long time. Superb. Top marks for coordination - I'd love to see the outtakes on this one. Hahaha

OK there may be only one reason for liking this band but what a reason:

Get cape. Wear cape. Fly.

That's a name.

And the music's alright as well.

Tool - 10,000 Days

For you Tool fans out there - this album is a little weird. A couple of good-great tracks, but nothing near the majesty of Lateralus. Go buy Lateralus. Hypnotic raaaaah rock. This guy can fucking sing.

Audioslave - Out of Exile

The best thing to happen to Rage Against the Machine after Zack de la Rocha, Chris Cornell knows how to bring back that rack sound without being too preachy. Great album 4/5. Has anyone heard Revelations yet or the new Muse album. Jonnyboy - review please.
jonnyploy
Ok, here you go...

Muse - Black Holes and Revelations:

This album is a vast operatic beast of a thing. Muse take their last album (Absolution, which was pretty apocalyptic in its own right) and crank things up a couple of notches. Supermassive Black Hole is immense funky techno rock, Knights of Cydonia has horses galloping all the way through it and Invincible is a big chunk of extra mature cheese (but no less wonderful for that).

Listen and be in awe.
Sammyboy
Good things to watch out for coming soon:

THE KILLERS - album cunningly titled 'Sam's Town'. Promises to be fecjing ace (well... as long as you liked the first one as much as I did)

KASABIAN - thats ker-say-bee-ann (if you've been listening to A&J) anyone like these guys? I do! The album might be out already, called 'Empire'.

All other things beginning with 'K'. Karate, Ketchup, Kingol, KFC.
