I am in no way coherent enough to even remember what I have come across this year

By way of explanation: I simply sorted the 'Purchased' playlist in itunes by date added and went through everything I'd bought in 2010.

That Pledge music thing sounds awesome, but it's the wrong way round for me. I really struggle to buy music blind (or deaf?). I have to know that I like something before I buy it, and no band can guarantee that I will like a future album of theirs. Not even if Muse were taking part would I do this. Also, I don't really do albums any more.

If they knock out some good stuff I will be more than happy to buy it.

QUOTE
as if Joy Division were starting out right now

Sounds like it could be amazing, will check it out.

Regarding my list, Hurts seem to be the Pet Shop Boys if they were starting out right now. (That is a good thing in case you were wondering).

Pledge music thing

I agree. That's risk free music. Where's the danger, the emotion in that? The music would be shite...

It's not like the great art masterpieces of history were created under contract.

Hmmm...I do like arguing with myself. Move on.

Yep. They should let you hear it first...hum it or something, then they can raise the money, then make the song.

King
Interesting...if you can't bring yourself to contibute money sight unseen (or sound unheard I guess) that's fair enough. I think it's not so much to convert people to new stuff but for existing fans; a way for bands to cut out the need for a loan from the record company to make an album and just get the money direct. I'm not sure they make any profit from it - any excess tends to go to charity from what I picked up (admittedly without looking very far) so it's not risk free; if the album doesn't sell subsequently they're still a bit buggered. Also the fans get 'exclusive content' like signed albums or a gig at thier house if they pay more.

Anyway; a good idea I think.
DanSon
Cool - lets get Cast to come play at my next firepit wink.gif

I personally don't see why they should give the excess to charity - if they do well, great. Maybe give a percentage to charity, that's nice, but nothing wrong with earning a living.

I agree that it is a good thing and I hope it will be a success. It's just not something I would contribute to, simply due to my weirdness about waiting til I know I like it.
King
I found this fascinating. RT @Crucialdude: The real reason good bands break up. http://j.mp/hoYZrQ
jonnyploy
Surely part of the reason that these bands have failed is that no one has ever heard of them? Or is it just me who is completely oblivious to the existence of anyone mentioned in that article?

Nice article though. It is a common misconception that bands have lots of money.
King
Aw come on; you must know Ace Enders, he did...that song, and some other stuff...nope, actually I have no clue. But to be fair it's clearly an American article which will have a bearing on us havingheard of th bands it mentions.

The last three tracks win.
Tart
For those of you who know Girl Talk and those who don't: http://illegal-art.net/allday/ 71 minutes of genius.

So, I fancy a bit of festival action this summer. The festival that I am thinking about is Latitude.

Anyone interested? Weekend tickets are £170, with daily tickets being £70.
DanSon
Don't know enough of that line up! But I do know that Sophie Madeline is playing near Covent Garden in May and I'm going to go.

Apparently you are not alone in having no enthusiasm for this idea. Oh well.
DanSon
Come to the Cambridge Folk Festival instead? =)
http://www.cambridgefolkfestival.co.uk/
King
I would actually go to the Cambridge Folk festival.
King
Last night I downloaded Autopia by Eat Light Become Lights, after I heard the opening track 'Test Drive' played by Tom Ravenscroft on 6Music.

I really like the album - it's an instrumental indie-rock ode to Krautrock (apparently), but it reminds me most of Six by Seven (possibly because of the song 'Eat Junk, Become Junk') without any vocals or of those tracks you sometimes get at the end of an album when the singer gives up and lets the rest of the band jam for 8 minutes.

Anyway check 'em out on Youtube etc. especially if you like Kraftwerk, Neu!, and the like. In fact I may go and check out some Neu! now that I found I like ELBL...any recommendations?
DanSon
Ok I didn't understand any of that...
but the line up for the cambridgefolkfestival is emerging:

http://www.cambridgefolkfestival.co.uk/art...os-playing-when

Anyone game? Basically two full days Sat+Sunday for £100.
King
It's not that complicated Dan; one review I read (click here) started on Hitler and moved on through Walt Disney and JG Ballard before even getting to Kraftwerk. Only then was the album mentioned.

If you don't know Kraftwerk, think Bill Bailey doing the Hokey Kokey with Kevin Eldon in a electronic, Germanic style...I'm sure you can find that on YouTube.

Anyway, £100 seems a bit steep to stand in a field watching Laura Marling and Pentangle (despite the possibilites for Hat, Pipe, Beards in the crowd) so maybe not. (LM and Pentangle are the only acts I've heard of in that line-up; I'm sure the rest are great too but £100...)
jonnyploy
Yeah, Cambridge Folk Festival looks good, but I still prefer the look of Latitude. For your extra £70 squids you get a Comedy Arena with Adam Buxton and Never Mind The Buzzcocks amongst others, a Film and Music Arena with Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon and Mark Lamarr, a Literary Arena, and even the chance to listen to an Eddy Temple Morris set in the woods.
DanSon
Well I've actually booked - but to go only on the Saturday - and that's just £50. Price of a nice meal and drinks for a full day's entertainment. Can't go wrong.

I propose we Fest it up - Saturday at the Cambridge Folk Festival. Stay over night and Sunday at mine for a trademark firepit BBQ.

King i like how you attempt to clarify your review by pointing me at one that makes even less sense. =) I admit my trouble is out of utter ignorance of every band / person mentioned (apart from Hitler).

jonnyploy
I am up for the festification of that weekend.

I too was initially confused by the review Dannyboy, for similar reasons to you, although I've heard of Kraftwerk.

Here it is in a nutshell:

King heard this song on the radio. He liked it and decided the buy the album. He also likes the album and as a result will be looking into some of the German electronic music pioneers who were influences for the album.

As far as I can tell Hitler has no relevance to the story.

Thank-you Dan, I'm just waiting for my Plain English Campaign Crystal Mark certification to come through any day now.

(Although Jon clearly wins it having succinctly explained my ramblings...though I'm sure Hitler must be important somehow.)

In regards to The Cambridge Folk (Badger)Festival: you have piqued my interest and I may take you up on that idea.
DanSon
I've officialised the idea with an Organised Crime topic. We'll see if this can work.

p.s. that crystal mark idea looked great until it became apparent it was a giant moneyspinning con =)
jonnyploy
I'm talking mainly to King here.

Remember Atari Teenage Riot?

Feast your eyes (and destroy your ears) on this.
King
You know; if I ever owned an album by Atari Teenage Riot than I have effectively scoured the memory from my mind (though the cover of 60 Second Wipe Out is starting to look familiar). I have a suspicion that I may have succumbed and tried hard to convince myself that I was enjoying the listening experience of being shouted at to the background of badly recorded thrashing guitars and clunking drums. Nowadays I think I'd admire the concept and execution and go and listen to Uresei Yatsura. In fact there's an idea...

I'll have to check it out properly later. Does Tart have memory of ATR? We would have been sharing a study at the time...

It's a good post though.
jonnyploy
It may well be that I am imagining it Kingol. I do remember having conversations about ATR with someone, and I just assumed it was you because that is a safe assumption when it comes to conversations I've had about less well-known bands.
King
Currently really enjoying Big Roar by The Joy Formidable; some excellent female vocal-led indie rock in the vein of a The Duke Spirit or The Subways but with a sort of reverberating quality that puts me in mind of Arcade Fire for some reason.

Check it.

Spotify

I have been dabbling with Spotify for quite a while now, but last week I took the decision to enter into a fully committed relationship by signing up for a premium account. For those of you who don't know, that involves me paying £9.99 per month in order to be able to play as many songs as I like advert free on my pc and my phone (and soon my ipad), sync playlists to those devices so that I can play them whilst offline. The bitrate of the files also improves with the premium service.

So far I am not regretting this decision at all. It has instantly made purchasing songs from itunes completely unnecessary, which will save me approximately £300 a year based on my purchase history.

Particularly great is the ability to make a playlist of songs available offline on my phone.

If you're interested put the following in Spotify's search field to find my profile: spotify:user:jonnyploy.

Latitude Festival. Anyone interested at all?
Sammyboy
I seem to be getting all my music these days from 'Shazamming' things, here are some highlights:

Radar Detector - Darwin Dees
Cissy Strut - The Meters
Float On - Modest Mouse
Techno Fan - The Wombats
Simon Says - Pharoah Monche
That's All - Genesis
jonnyploy
I have made a Spotify playlist based on this thread to date.

The main rule I followed was that each artist is restricted to one song.
DanSon
Hi Jonnyboy / King - I thought you might be interested in this site. It sells 10 digital albums for $15 - one 'drop' a month:

p.s. Awesome effort with that playlist. I struggle to use spotify properly so this will make my life easier.

on the subject of spotify:

Can we put together a playlist of all the old mid-90's badgerfest classics? if they exist on there?

I'm thinking things like Montrose Avenue, Midget, Apollo 440 and the like?

I did this a while back in response to this thread.

Here is the Spotify link to the playlist. Unfortunately, the following artists are not yet on Spotify:

- Midget
- Annie Christian
- Symposium
- Co.uk
- Electrasy

Probably a few more also. I will keep an eye an update it if anything changes. Meanwhile, if you have any suggestions for more songs to add then let me know. I'm not actually sure how far I got with that thread so I will take another look at it tonight.

Is there an option to allow collaborators to add tracks to the list... I noticed some Empire Records tracks weren't on your list...

Are we sticking to the 1 song per artist rule?

I've already reached a few dilemmas

phonics - traffic/1000 trees/tramps vest
3rd eye - semicharmed/hows it going to be
radiohead - just/creep
etc

I don't think we need the same rules for the badgerfest playlist - it's just for our enjoyment so anything goes really.

The rules for the music thread playlist were for my sanity as much as anything.

In news of interest to few (i.e. me and Jonnyboy): Bitter Ruin are going to be supporting Ben Folds Five on their UK tour. BR are an unsigned duo who I have pencilled in to play at my wedding so obviously I think they're great and I hope Jon is blown away when he sees them too. Make sure you get there early enough JB.

Also let's hope this doesn't mean they become huge just yet as then doing a gig for us might be low on their list of things to do...
jonnyploy
Ah coolio.

For those of you on Spotify, there is a surprisingly good selection of their stuff on there.
