King
Bill

The story of Shakespeare's humble origins told through the lense of the (strangely un-monikered) Horrible Histories/Yonderland mob.

I was cautiously optimistic about the prospect of this film; I've found the HH skits I've seen gently amusing and have enjoyed the silliness of Yonderland without ever been moved beyond a mild chuckle. Fortunately Bill did not disappoint: It's gloriously silly and not afraid to linger over a joke that has absolutely no bearing on the plot (King Phillip stabbing a table had me in stitches), whilst commiting to other running jokes with admirable staunchness. Among the bum jokes and fake moustaches ("King Phillip the second of Spain!") there are jokes that range in sophistication from mis-quoting Star Wars to the death of Christopher Marlowe. It's not totally perfect; the plot is a touch patchy and I'm convinced I laughed much more than any of the kids in the cinema but I was having far too much fun to care. 3.5/5

We need a Star Wars review here King/JP. I haven't seen it yet. Your review may tip the balance.

I almost managed to watch Mad Max. I've been waiting until I find a sufficiently large TV. My plan is to set very close to my parents 60" behemoth...once i get them a decent sound system.

Paddington

After an earthquake destroys his home a rare Peruvian bear travels to London in order to find a new one.

I had absolutely no intention of seeing this after catching the trailer which made it look like a run-of-the-mill 'hilarious hi-jinks with cartoon bear' sort of slim.  However all the reviews were absolutely glowing so I gave it a chance and I'm very happy I did.  It is a warm and funny film with some great performances, a positive message and a winning central character tying it all together.

I'd really recommend seeing it (bearing in mind the PG rating if you take your kids - it's not overly naughty but Paddington does stuff you wouldn't want copied (like climbing bookshelves)).

LOL. We encourage climbing here. Or we just can't stop it, either way. I definitely enjoyed this movie.

Short answer: It's very good. Go and see it if you like Star Wars. 4/5

Longer answer to follow if I get round to it...

Shame you missed MM in the cinema - I doubt it will be quite the riotous joy on the small (ish in your case) screen.

Amy

I haven't posted a film review for a long time. Probably because I rarely get to watch a film all the way through now without being interrupted by sproglets. And a visit to the cinema is a rare event indeed!

However, we did both manage to sit down and watch 'Amy', the Amy Winehouse documentary the other night when it was aired on terrestrial television (remember that?), and I thought it was very good, and very tragic.

Ok, so she made some very bad decisions, and obviously things happened in her life to make her the way she was, but she had an incredible voice and great lyric writing skills and you can't help but feel sad at the path her life took. Jonnyboy and I experienced this first hand when we bought tickets to see her in concert only to turn up and find out she had cancelled during one of her more boozy phases.

She seemed to have been surrounded by bad men through most of her life. Blake Fielder-Civil (her husband/boyfriend) by all accounts just seems like a terrible human being. Her Dad (who is absent for most of her life it seems) suddenly materialises when fame comes calling, and by all accounts does not do much to help her, even bringing a camera crew to her island getaway where she has come to get away from everything!

A very moving doc, funny, sad, tragic, spellbinding. An amazing talent cut short through bad decisions, bad influences, drugs and drink.
